Marlow

Beautifully situated on the banks of the River Thames. Marlow is an excellent centre for touring the Chiltern Hills. The town was mentioned in the Domesday Book and during the 11th century was an important religious centre.

Marlow Place dating from 1721 was once occupied by King George 11. Together with Remnantz, an 18th century house in West Street, Marlow Place was once part of the Royal Military College before it moved to Sandhurst in 1812.

Many literary personalities have lived in Marlow. The poet Shelley and his wife Mary, writer of Frankenstein. Jerome K. Jerome, who wrote Three Men in a Boat at the Two Brewers in St. Peter Street. T.S. Elliot, Thomas Love Peacock and Frank Smedley all found inspiration in Marlow.

The most prominent feature of the town is the famous suspension bridge built in 1836 by W. Tierney. The list of vicars in the nearby church dates back to 1204.
